Asthma

Asthma is common lung condition among children and teens. Symptoms are: shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. The important thing that every parent should know is that even babies can have asthma. This condition affects on the airways (bronchial tubes). When a person breathes normally, air passes through the nose or mouth and goes into the trachea. It passes through bronchial tubes into the lungs and finally goes out. People with asthma have airways that produce a lot of mucus and they are hypersensitive to smoke, dust and similar things. This means that they reduce the air flow.

In the United States, more than 25 million people have asthma. It is the main reason why children chronically miss school. Some kids have only occasional symptoms or their symptoms are visible after exercising. Other kids have severe asthma. They must pay attention on physical activity! Thanks to the medicine, parents and children with asthma can have a normal life. With a certain management plan they can control the symptoms and flare-ups.

Children with asthma have problems with flare-ups. Basically, they are asthma attacks, which happens when air cannot go through airways. They happen without a warning! Asthma flare-ups can be caused by: excess mucus, swelling (which cause narrower airways) and bronchoconstriction (muscles around the airways narrows). During this attack, children may experience: chest tightness, wheezing, coughing and may have: sweating, shortness of breath and increased heart rate.

Diagnosing asthma may be difficult, because kids may have different symptoms. Parents must give information to the doctor that include: allergies (kid’s and family history), illnesses (how often a child gets colds and etc.), triggers (what can irritate the airways) and symptoms (when, where and how often they happen).
